'The Hunger Games: Catching Fire' tracking to break November box-office record

We know the stakes are high, but we also know that from what we have seen of the trailers and stills, Catching Fire rivals the genius of its prequel, The Hunger Games.

So, it comes as no surprise that box-office predictions for the movie are sky-rocketing. Even as it faces competition from Disney’s Frozen and Thor: The Dark World, the projections sit at a comfortable $140-150 million on the opening.

“Between Jennifer Lawrence’s exploding popularity and the momentum from the first movie, ‘Catching Fire’ is going to be a cultural phenomenon, and will be significantly bigger than the original at the box office,” said Exhibitor Relations vice-president and senior analyst Jeff Bock.

This could be a spot-on prediction, given that the record-holder for November right now is New Moon, which opened with $142 million in 2009. From then to now, the adaptations’ market has seen a tremendous growth and we wouldn’t be surprised if Catching Fire surpasses the record.

The Hunger Games opened to $152 million in March, 2012, also a record.
