Gary Ross credits ‘The Hunger Games’ for inspiration behind ‘Ocean’s 8’

If you’re living under a rock – the all-female heist movie, Ocean’s 8, dropped its first trailer yesterday.

The movie is directed by The Hunger Games alum, Gary Ross. In an interview with Entertainment Weekly, Ross talks about the influence of Katniss Everdeen, a woman protagonist, on Ocean’s 8 as a deliberate choice of project.

“When I did Hunger Games I had so many people warn me that it could never be successful, not because of the violence or anything like that but that no one would ever go to a movie with this kind of female protagonist,” Ross told EW. “I disagreed. I loved making that movie for that reason. I loved seeing Jennifer in that role and seeing her be empowered in that way and seeing boys and girls respond to it equally.”

Ocean’s 8 stars Sandra Bullock, Cate Blanchett, Mindy Kaling, Rihanna, Helena Bonham Carter, Anne Hathaway, Sarah Paulson, Awkwafina as the main heist crew.

The movie hits theaters June 8, 2018.
