The possibility of a The Hunger Games-spinoff has been doing the rounds for quite a few months.

This morning, Lionsgate CEO Jon Feltheimer in a conference call spoke to analysts where he reiterated his plans to further The Hunger Games franchise.

According to Deadline, Lionsgate is “actively looking at some development and thinking about prequel and sequel possibilities.”

Last month, Feltheimer mentioned the Harry Potter-spinoff Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them and Lord of the Rings-prequel The Hobbit trilogy as examples for his interest in expanding The Hunger Games and Divergent, as well.

He told The Hollywood Reporter, “Not saying specifically for The Hunger Games, but we have other franchises, too. If you look atDivergent, for example, after the third book, [author Veronica Roth] actually put out a novella called Four. There may be other material there. One never knows when we dig into the treasure troves of these brilliant writers what we might find.”

Earlier in November, director Francis Lawrence too weighed in on the probability of the studio going for an expansion.

“Everybody is thinking about [expanding the franchise], and talking about it,” Lawrence said. “I just think that one has to go into that world carefully. A huge part of what makes the stories great is that it was really built upon this idea of the consequence of war, and you have an amazing character like Katniss at the center of it. To just say, ‘Oh, we’re still in the “Hunger Games” world’ is really risky.”

However, just because it’s risky doesn’t mean it might not happen.

“You need to make sure that you have something new to say,” Lawrence continued. “New characters need to be created that are just as compelling as Katniss. It’s a tricky thing, but I’m definitely open to talking about it, and I think everybody’s thinking about it. Everybody loves the world, and the ideas.”

We think there are so many opportunities to explore the world of Panem, should Lionsgate really go ahead with the decision. Characters like Finnick Odair and Johanna Mason would obviously have interesting stories to tell, akin to Katniss Everdeen.

What are your thoughts on a possible The Hunger Games-spinoff?

  1. I really want there to be another movie, it would be great to see Finnick’s life before the Hunger Games and maybe even his games. It may be cool to also have a movie about Kattniss’s kids
